Red Run: The Working River Warren Sends to Lake St. Clair

It looks like a ditch and behaves like a river system. The Red Run Drain and Bear Creek carry Warren's stormwater to the Clinton River — and everything in it eventually reaches the lake.

Red Run: The Working River Warren Sends to Lake St. Clair (Warren Arsenal News)

Warren has no riverfront, but it absolutely has a river. The Red Run Drain, joined by Bear Creek, is an open inter-county storm drain that carries water off the roofs, roads and parking lots of Warren and its neighbors, east into the Clinton River and on to Lake St. Clair. In the 1800s these were small creeks winding through farmland. Today they are engineered channels doing urban work — and what they carry is a regional responsibility.

Storm drains are honest infrastructure: everything that washes off a city ends up in them. Fertilizer from lawns, oil from pavement, salt from winter roads — the Red Run collects Warren's runoff the way a mirror collects a face. That is why the drain's health shows up in conversations far beyond Warren, in the beach-closure notices and algae concerns of Lake St. Clair, the shallow, beloved lake that receives the Clinton River's whole 760-square-mile watershed.

Managing that connection is a shared job. Inter-county drain authorities, the county public works office and city public services departments all hold pieces of it — maintaining channels, managing stormwater ponds and enforcing the rules that keep construction sediment and spills out of the water. Homeowners hold a piece too, in the form of downspouts, rain barrels and the fertilizer bag in the garage.

The stakes are easy to see on a summer weekend at Lake St. Clair's marinas and Metropark beaches, most of them a short drive from Warren's eastern border. The lake is Macomb County's front yard, and Warren, though it touches no shoreline, is one of its upstream landlords.

So the next time you cross the Red Run on a mile-road bridge, look down. That unglamorous channel is Warren's contribution to the Great Lakes — worth keeping clean, and worth remembering it is a river.
